  • Dental Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are two of the most common dental procedures performed, proven by the test of time. The advances in technology and materials have led to improvements in both crowns and bridges, bringing us more natural looking, durable restorations that can last for many years. At Meadows Dental Care, we use the latest technology to maximize our patients’ investment into their smile.

The purpose of a dental crown is to restore function to a tooth that has been structurally compromised. A crown may be made from a variety of materials, including gold, metal alloy, and porcelain. Many patients today choose beautiful porcelain crowns for their natural tendencies, which are very similar to tooth enamel. In the past, porcelain would only be used as a topping for a metal-based crown due to perceptions of fragility. Today, specially made porcelain is ideal for dental restorations, leading to the most natural appearance and years of function.

A crown is essentially a cover that fits over existing tooth structure. Some of the reasons crowns may be recommended include:

  • A tooth or teeth has become damaged due to grinding or clenching.
  • Excessive wear has occurred.
  • A tooth has been treated with root canal therapy, which may cause brittleness.
  • A fracture or break has occurred.
  • Treatment with veneers will not sufficiently correct cosmetic imperfections such as gaps or cracks.
  • Tooth replacement will take place with a fixed bridge.

Crowns are also used in dental implant treatment, which can replace one tooth or several. When implants are placed, a special type of crown is designed to attach to the abutment, or connecting piece, of the implant.

Dental bridges can be used to replace a number of missing teeth. This appliance is typically fixed, which means that it is a permanent fixture in the mouth. A fixed bridge contains two dental crowns and one or more artificial teeth. Designed in a dental lab, the bridge will be fused into one unit. This unit is bonded over the two teeth that lie outside of the gap, situating the artificial tooth or teeth as needed for restored beauty and function.

Just as a dental crown, it is possible to support a bridge with dental implants. With an implant supported bridge, the benefit is that natural tooth structure is preserved because we do not have to rely on the teeth outside of the gap for stability. Therefore, these teeth are not crowned. Because dental implants become a permanent fixture in the jawbone, the stability of an implant supported bridge is excellent.
